State Museum of the East
presents a photo exhibition
"Indonesia. Territory of century traditions "
organized on the eve of two important events: the 75th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia, which will be celebrated in 2020.
First show of the project
The main building on Nikitsky Boulevard
05/29/2019 - 06/16/2019
Curator of the exhibition: Natalia Gozheva
The exhibition is supported by the ASEAN Center at MGIMO of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Russian Federation

Each topic is devoted to individual stands, and each photo - a separate story, which can be found in the audio guide. For example, why does the old woman of the Papuan people have no tribute to the upper phalanges of the fingers? Why during the festival on the Dieng plateau perform the ceremony of cutting off the girl's heavily matted, felted hair? Or for what purpose, here, in Central Java, are the locals throwing a live goat and chicken into the smoking crater of Bromo volcano? What ancient ritual is associated with the jump of a young man from the island of Nias through a two-meter stone? What does the warrior outfit with animal skulls of the traditional Dayak dance of Kalimantan mean? And why bites the tail of a bull rider during a bull race in West Sumatra? Behind each photograph of the exhibition lies its own story telling about one of the many peculiar traditions preserved on the islands of the Malay Archipelago.
"Indonesia. The Territory of Ancient Traditions” is the name of not only an exhibition, but also a photo album.
